On November 16, 2011, the United States Senate called attention to the diabetes epidemic by passing Senate Resolution 327—Supporting the Goals and Ideals of American Diabetes Month, a resolution recognizing November as American Diabetes Month. The resolution was sponsored by by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), as a way to raise awareness about the nearly 26,000,000 people in the United States with the disease and 79,000,000 people of the United States who have pre-diabetes. Senators Collins and Shaheen serve as Co-Chairs of the Senate’s Diabetes Caucus.
