American Heart Association issues new guidelines; affect T2D patients

For the first time in a decade, the American Heart Association in conjunction with the American College of Cardiology is issuing new guidelines for the use of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs to target preventing heart attacks and strokes. Among the most dramatic changes, people ages 40-75 with Type 2 diabetes will now be recommended to take a statin drug, regardless of their cholesterol. Read more.

How to spot the warning signs of diabetes in children

UF type 1 diabetes expert Desmond Schatz and Shannon Lyles, a UF Health registered nurse, were both recently featured in a news segment on the hallmark symptoms you should be aware of when considering whether a child has developed diabetes. Typical features are polydipsia, meaning drinking too much, and polyuria, urinating too much, but there are some lesser symptoms you should be on the look out for as well. Read more.

Metformin study seeks new T1D answers

UF Health diabetes researchers and patients will take part in a pilot study to determine whether metformin can improve blood sugar in patients with type 1 diabetes. JDRF and the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust are funding the study and the DCE is one of only two Florida research centers participating.

Weight-loss, diabetes outcomes boosted by Mediterranean diet plus interval workouts

A combination of high-intensity interval training and Mediterranean diet counseling was associated with reduced waist size and blood pressure levels and improved aerobic fitness in individuals with abdominal obesity, a recent Canadian study indicated. Diabetes patients on the combination program showed a mean blood glucose improvement of 23%, researchers reported at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress. Read more.

UF researchers receive $3.7 million to evaluate weight management programs for rural residents

The University of Florida has received a $3.7 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to test long-term weight management programs geared to people living in rural areas. The UF study will include men and women ages 21 to 75 living in 10 rural counties in north Florida. All participants will participate in a 4-month lifestyle program with face-to-face group sessions led by local providers at UF/IFAS Extension county offices.
