As a long-time diabetes advocate, UF Health physician Janet Silverstein, M.D., has been traveling to Camp Winona in the Ocala National Forest to serve as medical director for the Florida Camp for Children and Youth with Diabetes since 1979.
At diabetes camp, Dr. Silverstein provides education to children with diabetes, as well as to medical students, pharmacy students, nursing students and other medical professionals. Dr. Silverstein is passionate about camp because it is often the first time children with diabetes realize they are not alone in fighting the disease.
In addition to serving as the medical director at diabetes camp, Dr. Silverstein is a leader at many national organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Endocrine Society, the National Diabetes Education Program, the American Diabetes Association, the American Board of Pediatrics, and the FDA Advisory Panel for Endocrine and Metabolic Disease.
