Diabetes Week 2012

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. We hope you will join members of the community, patients, scientists and care givers as we gather to celebrate, educate and share our desire to continue to innovate in the field of diabetes.

We encourage you to share these events with others and invite your friends!

Location: Infirmary Building Infirmary Building at 280 Fletcher Drive (Main Campus)
The Student Health Care Center will sponsor complimentary blood glucose screenings (type one and type two) on World Diabetes Day, in collaboration with the UF Diabetes Center of Excellence. Look for the tent on the front lawn outside of the Student Health Care Center. RN’s and a Nutritionist will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about managing diabetes.

Event Details

“Light the Tower”

Join us, Albert E. Gator, & the rest of the Gator nation as we light Century Tower in recognition of World Diabetes Day on Wed. Nov. 14 at Century Tower at 5:30 p.m. The annual lighting ceremony is recognized by the International Diabetes Federation as an event that “Shines a Light on Diabetes.”   Find directions and parking information to Century Tower here. Complimentary Blood Glucose Screenings (Both type one and type two screenings) will be made available, sponsored by the  UF Student Health Care Center. Don’t  forget the Hula Hoop Flash Mob at 5pm!

Alachua County Public Schools Poster Contest

Can you illustrate the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes? A $100 savings bond will be given to the Alachua County middle school student who can do it the best. The winner will be announced at the Century Tower Lighting Ceremony, Wednesday Nov. 14.  Directions and parking information to Century Tower can be found here.

 

Art and Photography Exhibit: ‘A Celebration of Life’

Please join us for an art and photography exhibit located in the UF Biomedical Sciences Building in the Broad-Bussell Atrium on Tuesday, November 13th, 11am – 6pm. This event is free and open to the public, HSC employees, and friends of the UF Diabetes Center of Excellence.

5th Annual World Diabetes Day Photo Contest

This is your chance to be creative and promote diabetes awareness. Blue circles are the global symbol associated with diabetes. So, take a picture that has one or more blue circles.  Single person or group shots are welcome. The contest entry deadline is November 12. Download the entry form here.

Ryan Reed Racing Experience

Ryan Reed is a professional NASCAR racecar driver for Venturini Motorsports. He was diagnosed with diabetes in February 2011 at the age of 17, and has since founded Ryan’s Mission to build awareness both in and out of the racing community and show all people with diabetes that you don’t have to let the disease stop you! Now is your chance to get up close and personal with Ryan and his Sam Bass designed No. 15 Ryan’s Mission Ford Fusion Simulator Show Car. Ryan will be available to sign autographs, and take photos with all of the UF supporters and fans.

Direction and parking information can be found here. Visitor parking at UF is free on weekends, first come first served. Garages 2 and 3 are closest to the BMS building.
