UF Researcher Receives T1D Grant To Study Mitochondria

Jing Chen, MD, PhD, researcher at the UF Diabetes Center of Excellence, will receive a $300,000 research grant to study Lymphocyte Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Type 1 diabetes, allowing further understanding of how mitochondria function affects two important cellular players in T1D: T cells and beta cells. Exercise Required to Maintain Weight Loss

According to a recent article in journal Circulation, dieting without exercise does not work because people plateau, fail to lose additional pounds, or get frustrated. This is in part due to the body’s response to calorie restriction and weight loss by burning fewer calories. Adding physical activity increases the calorie burn and "puts the body in that zone where it's going to work for you, not against you," said obesity expert Jim Hill, co-author of the paper. UF Genetics Institute Welcomes New Director, T1D Expert

Patrick J. Concannon, PhD, will serve as the next Director of the University of Florida Genetics Institute. Previously, Dr. Concannon served as Professor of Biochemistry and and Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. His research interests include cellular DNA damage responses, breast cancer genetics, and genetics of type 1 diabetes.

Regulating Glucose Can Prevent Onset of Type 2 Diabetes

People with pre-diabetes are significantly less likely to develop diabetes if their blood glucose levels are normalized in time, according to new research.
