UFDI Research Featured at ADA 75th Scientific Sessions Meeting

Members from the University of Florida Diabetes Institute will present their research findings at the 75th Annual Meeting of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in MA June 5-9, 2015. More than 40 UF physicians, researchers, graduate students, and faculty will take part in this year’s programming with authorship and/or contributions to late breaking abstracts, posters, oral presentations and more – all featured at one of the largest national conferences on diabetes.

Highlights

New Insights for Type 1 Diabetes

Ashby Walker, Ph.D., associate professor in the department of health outcomes and policy, UF College of Public Health and Health Professions, will present “Type 1 Diabetes through Two Lenses: Comparing Adolescent and Parental Perspectives with Photovoice,” at this year’s annual meeting. The 15-minute oral presentation will cover Walker’s photo project, which chronicles both parents’ and children’s perspectives on living with Type 1 Diabetes, with Henry Rohrs, M.D., assistant professor of pediatric endocrinology; Desmond A. Schatz, M.D., the medical director of the UF Diabetes Institute; Janet Silverstein, M.D., the division chief of pediatric endocrinology at UF; Kathryn Parker, R.D., L.D./N., the program manager for the Diabetes Self Management Education and Nutrition Therapy Center; Shannon Lyles, BSN, RN, CDE, a registered nurse specialist; and Cathryn Johnson, Ph.D., professor of sociology at Emory University.

Hidden Liver Disease

Kenneth CusI, M.D., chief, division of endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism in the UF College of Medicine, and his research team are investigating novel drugs that could offer new paradigms for treatment guidelines for the most common chronic liver disease – nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The disease typically accompanies obesity and has been shown to predict the development of type 2 diabetes. There are no approved drugs for the treatment of NAFLD at this time.  “In obesity, it’s not that you just have more fat – you have dysfunctional fat that doesn’t behave normally,” Cusi says. “Our research project represents a high impact research opportunity.”  His team will present their latest findings at this year’s annual meeting.
