UF Researchers Present at ADA’s 74th Scientific Sessions

lge_rruvf74_Meeting-ImageFrom population health to mitochondrial metabolism, UF and UF Health faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students took part in the American Diabetes Association’s 74th Scientific Sessions held June 13-17, 2014 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. The following is a comprehensive list of their original abstract posters, oral presentations, and audio posters during the conference. This year’s volume of submissions represent one of the largest showcases of research emanating from UF. We congratulate these individuals and look forward to their future achievements.

Haller smallTitle of Abstract: Combination Low-Dose Antithymocyte Globulin (ATG) and Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor (GCSF) Preserves Beta-Cell Function in Patients with Established Type 1 Diabetes

Name: Michael J. Haller, Mark A. Atkinson, Stephen E. Gitelman, Peter A. Gottlieb, Aaron Michels, Srinath Sanda, Stephen Rosenthal, Mary Alice Dennis, Miriam Cintron, Rebecca Wesch, Marcia Wertz, Kieran Mcgrail, Jenna Lungaro, Mara Schwartz, Maigan A. Hulme, Jenna Lungaro, Todd M. Brusko, Clayton E. Mathews, Clive Wasserfall, Desmond A. Schatz, Gainesville, FL, San Francisco, CA, Aurora, CO, Denver, CO

Details:  17 adult Type 1 diabetes patients were treated for two weeks with the cocktail therapy and then followed for a year. Another eight patients were given a placebo. By the end of the year,  patients treated with the cocktail had increased their ability to produce insulin. This indicates that the Thymoglobulin was successful in killing bad immune system cells, and the Neulasta was successful in stimulating new, healthy immune cells.

103009_VitaminDSupTitle of Abstract: Youth with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) Have More Vitamin D Deficiency than Youth with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D): The Pediatric Diabetes Consortium (PDC) (full abstract here)

Name: Jamie Wood, Fida Bacha, Steven M. Willi, Eda Cengiz, William V. Tamborlane, Brigid Gregg, Georgeanna J. Klingensmith, Desmond A. Schatz, Katrina Ruedy, Roy W. Beck, Craig Kollman, Crystal Connor, Heidi Haro, Los Angeles, CA, Houston, TX, Philadelphia, PA, New Haven, CT, Ann Arbor, MI, Aurora, CO, Gainesville, FL, Tampa, FL

Details: Vitamin D supports healthy bone development as well as potential benefits on glycemic control in management of diabetes. 5-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) levels were measured among 495 youth ages 10-21 diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.  Vitamin D deficiency occurred in 48% of T2D youth vs 17% of T1D youth. Variation by geographic region (e.g. higher latitudes), exposure to sun, and race/ethnicity all likely reflect the variation.

Title of Abstract: Prevalence of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Disease Severity among African Americans (AA) with Prediabetes (preDM) or Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) (full abstract here)

Name:
Fernando Bril, Sreevidya Subbarayan, Maryann Maximos, Paola Portillo Sanchez, Romina Lomonaco, Diane Biernacki, Amitabh Suman, Michelle Weber, Kenneth Cusi, Gainesville, FL

Details:
Researchers examined whether today’s monitoring methods underrepresent risk of of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and severe liver disease in African Americans living with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), as compared to Whites and Hispanics. 93 patients with preDM/T2DM were screened for NAFLD. 80% of African Americans screened had confirmed cases of NAFLD, demonstrating that African Americans are truly at risk of NAFLD/NASH and early screening is as important as for other ethnicities to prevent progressive liver disease.
